Digital wind turbine
3D model of an offshore wind turbine in the browser, made as a demo of a digital twin. You can start the rotor and turn the nacelle.
About the demo
Digital wind turbine is a 3D model of an offshore wind turbine, made as a demo of a digital twin. You can choose the hub or the nacelle (the turbine's machine room), look inside them and read about seven parts, including the generator, the gearbox and the service crane. The model is not connected to data from a real turbine.
My role
I prepared the model and designed how you explore it. In Blender I adjusted the turbine's geometry and materials and placed a named marker (an empty) at each of the seven parts, which the code uses to place the clickable points. It is the same principle as when a digital twin links 3D objects to data. I decided the logic, so you choose the hub or the nacelle, look inside through the X-ray view and can turn the nacelle. The Three.js code was made with Claude Code, which I directed, and I refined the camera movements and the views until the whole thing held together.
Technology
The demo runs in the browser with Three.js and WebGL and loads all files from the site itself. The model file is compressed, and the demo downloads about 1.3 MB. You drag with the mouse or a finger to rotate the camera and click or tap a point to zoom in on a part. A button starts and stops the rotor, and a slider turns the nacelle up to 35 degrees to each side. When the hub or the nacelle is selected, the X-ray button makes the shell transparent so the parts inside can be selected. The points can also be selected with the keyboard, and the demo is available in Danish and English.
